Seagull Bespoke Interiors

Company background
Seagull Bespoke Interiors is a bespoke fitted furniture and cabinetry business, specialising in fitted wardrobes, bookcases, media walls and kitchen projects.

Working from a well‑equipped workshop near Flimwell, East Sussex; the business delivers high‑quality, made‑to‑measure projects with a strong focus on craft and customer service.

Now in its third trading year, the business has achieved relative success and has subsequently invested heavily in a well-equipped 1,000 sq ft workshop.

Growth challenges
Despite strong foundations, several challenges were holding growth back:

  • Lack of a predictable sales pipeline made planning difficult
  • Single-person dependency limiting scalability
  • Skills and recruitment challenges
  • Setting long term strategic business goals

Recognising these challenges, business founder Joe Bellm sought external help from the Ambition to Action programme. Right after making contact, the businesses has worked closely with Business Adviser Kerry Byott in trying to map these challenges and their solutions in a structured, data driven manner, on a road to achieving their ambitions.

Specialist support
Through the Ambition to Action programme, Joe completed a structured GROWTHMapper diagnostic and in‑depth questionnaire about the business, followed by two advisory workshops to review the findings and shape a practical action plan. This included clarifying growth goals, exploring recruitment options, and signposting to specialist marketing support and apprenticeship advice. Some of the key outcomes of these were:

  • Looking at what was working well on operations and to clarify some business goals
  • Specialist introduction for marketing strategy to look at strengthening lead generation and brand positioning
  • Introduction to a local education institution in order to explore apprenticeship options and funded training routes.

Through this support partnership Kerry has helped the business explore in depth the challenges of inconsistent workflow, unpredictable lead generation and over-reliance on the founder by introducing clearer systems and structured planning. This included assessing whether to hire an experienced craftsperson or bring in a more junior team member to train, which in turn would free up the founder’s time to move into more of a managerial position in the company.

On the support the business received, Joe notes;

“Through the Ambition to Action programme, I had the opportunity to work with a business advisor, which helped me step back and review my business more objectively. While a lot of the areas we discussed were already on my radar, the process did highlight a few things I hadn’t fully considered and gave me some useful takeaways.

The most valuable part of the programme for me, though, was the specialist support. I was able to access six hours with a marketing and branding specialist, which was extremely beneficial. It gave me a proper break from the day-to-day running of the business and allowed me to focus on marketing in a much more structured way. I came away with a lot of practical, actionable ideas that I’ve already started implementing.

It’s still early to quantify the exact impact, but the changes I’ve made to my website, my customer interactions, and my overall approach to marketing should help me attract better-fit clients, increase the amount of work coming in, and ultimately improve profitability and support future growth.”

Impact to the local economy
By supporting Seagull Bespoke Interiors to move from an over reliance on the single-founder for most things in the business towards planning for long term growth the programme is helping to safeguard an existing high‑value cabinetry business and grow local skills. The programme intervention anticipates safeguarding and creation of new roles as the business grows its capacity and customer base. This would also contribute further to the local supply chain and the wider East Sussex economy.
